When Trying Is NOT Lying

A while back I was bemoaning my horrible wire wrapping skills on the comments to Lori's blog, Pretty Things. She gave me some really good advice. She said to just do it! And do it again. That's the way she learned -- just by repetition. Smack my head w/ my hand. So profound (?) it never occurred to me. I thought I was just destined to be unable to do this cool trick.

So, thanks to Lori, I sat down with a great little book from Kate McKinnon that had excellent photos and wrapped until my hands hurt (ergonomic plyers would be so nice!). Here's what I came up with.

A lot of the not-so-good wraps, yes. But also a lot of progress. I'm still not a whiz at this. I need to practice more but I'm less daunted by it. (This a practice bracelet, not meant to be worn.)

So here was a case where I was really trying and not lying about that at all!

CUTE they look so neat all dangling like that.

I agree, wire wrapping is a skill that you get by doing it over and over and over again. eventually you will be able to do them in your sleep. but it looks like you have the hang of it!

and i will tell you what i told someone i taught wire wrapping to this week - not every one has to be perfect, that is how you know it is hand made and not made in some factory (i had a cold connections teacher tell me that. made me feel better, cause my cold connections suck ;)

That is a great job at wire wrapping, I would wear the bracelet and I agree with Donna it does look like Christmas lights add a few jingle bells and it would make a cute Christmas bracelet.

It does look like Christmas lights! Maybe you should make a 9ft garland? LOL! I see much progress being made, I still can't do it worth squat.

Sal, what gauge wire did Kate say to use? Either mine is two soft and breaks or to hard and won't wrap. lol.

I think your practice bracelet looks great! I agree with Amy - sometimes the less perfect ones are the most interesting to look at :-)

Sally, what great advice from a pro! :-) I taught a friend wire wrapping in the Spring, and she made a rosary for her son. That involved a LOT of wire wrapping, and let me tell you, her loops looked perfect by the end! She was so hooked she's gone on to make a second one as a teacher's gift. :-)

It's a great start and Lori's advice was excellent, everything takes practice and we all have to start somewhere.
When making a number of identical dangles or drops I found that investing in a pair of bailing pliers was most helpful. I went for years without one and now that I finally purchased a pair I can't imagine living without them. :)
