Not too much beading...

I can't believe I haven't written here in so long but I've been working... working... working. I love my job and love that I can work in my pjs if I want to (I often want to). But when I work this much, it leaves little time or energy for anything fun. So just to give my hands something to do when my brain wasn't really engaged, I did a couple of Christmas projects.

First an ornament for each of the grandgirls. I would love to make the making of ornaments an annual thing for the girls so when they grow up and have their own trees, they'll get a set of ornaments (or a bunch) ready made. I tried to do this with Brooke and dutifully wrote down each ornament each year -- for about 5 years until the list was lost or something. But I still got the ornaments for her. I am so bad at this sort of thing. But I'll try again. Maybe I'll be better now that I'm old. HA!

These had felt backing to cover up the ugly threads, and they are cute (and totally brainless to do).

Then I had this pattern from Heather Collin and decided to make a couple (ha!) chili peppers. I really liked making this. The pattern is straightforward and easy to follow. But I would love to know a way to decrease in tubular peyote that doesn't leave bumpy bits all over the piece. I turned to my favorite seed bead books (5 of them) but nobody covered what I was looking for.

I made most of these w/ 2 colors of red & 2 of green just so I'd know where the end of the row was and when it was time to "step up." I tried one without that and it was okay. I did have to take out the stitches a few more times than I did on the 2 color ones because counting seemed to be something I wasn't capable of!  Most of these are seed beads but I did one in delicas (on the bottom) in the hopes of avoiding the bumpy bits but no. Still bumpy. GRRR!  Oh, well. They were still fun and totally brainless which, for my addled mind, was perfect!

I agree with Elisabeth - the bumpy bits on the chilis, and the chilis themselves, are really cool!

Love the ornaments - they were only sitting in my to-do craft closet (which Ajax has taken over...) for 10 years!!! hahaha! So glad you got them done! Trying to get one done for you to hang on your... door? Cabinet pulls? Glasses? :D

Glad you're posting again!

Sally,
What a wonderful tradition you have going on for your grandaughters I really like that idea, and those are adorable ornaments.
Love those peppers bumpy parts and all and I agree with the others they look more like the real peppers with the bumps.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours,
Therese

I also think the bumps make the peppers look more real. My mom makes me an ornament every year and I love that our tree is covered in so many memories. She called me up this year and asked if she still had to give me an ornament (now that I'm married and old. LOL.) I said YES! She made me a beehive ornament that's cut out of wood and painted. This was her first year keeping bees. I love it. Little does she know that she's getting a honeycomb pendant that I made for Christmas. :)

So funny that you don't like the bumpy bits, and we all do!!! I love the chili peppers, and the train! This is so great, and I'm wondering if my kids are too old for me to do that now...

You may call them "brainless to do" but I'd be throwing beads and string everywhere in frustration!

Sally, what a wonderful tradition - making ornaments for your Grandchildren. My Grandmother was very crafty and made handmade holiday decorations from ornaments to wreaths - I cherish those memories. You are one fantastic Grandma!! I love the beadwork ornaments. I am in awe. They look like they took a year to make - you know seed beads have me stumped!

I agree with everyone that the bumps add charm. But I also like the flat ornaments, too! Where did you get the patterns for them? (I would love to find a cat one.)

Hi Sally
I have to agree with the other gals who like the bumpy bits on your chilis...they are cute as are the ornaments.

Those are some HOT chili's! I love them just the way they are, now they can play hid the chili instead of a pickle on the tree. LOL.
